Bishop Gabino Zavala Named Bishop President of Pax Christi USA
Succeeds Richmond, Va. Bishop Walter F. Sullivan as leader of Catholic peace movement
Washington, D.C.- The Most Reverend Gabino Zavala, J.C.L., was named Bishop President of Pax Christi USA, the national Catholic peace movement, at its August 2003 National Assembly in New York, N.Y. Bishop Zavala, Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles, is the third bishop president in the history of Pax Christi USA.
“Bishop Zavala’s dynamic energy and commitment to peace are invaluable assets to Pax Christi USA and the entire peace movement,” said Dave Robinson, national coordinator of Pax Christi USA. “Whether through his work in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops or his work heading the San Gabriel Pastoral Region in California, Bishop Zavala’s dedication to the gospel of nonviolence is unwavering, and a true inspiration to activists and peacemakers in the Catholic Church and beyond.”
Bishop Zavala received a master’s degree in divinity from St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, and earned a Licentiate in Canon Law from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Ordained Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles in 1994, Bishop Zavala serves on the domestic policy and canonical affairs committees for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, as well as the ad hoc committee on the Spanish translation of the American Bible. Bishop Zavala also served as chair of the sub-committee for Encuentro 2000, “Many Faces in God’s House.”
“For Pax Christi USA, it’s great to have a new voice, and I think Bishop Zavala brings a sincere enthusiasm for the work of peace,” said retiring Bishop President Walter Sullivan. “And I like the fact that we have someone in this position whose heritage is Hispanic. He takes Pax Christi USA out of our Anglo-White center, you might say, as we try to reach out to the broader Catholic community.”
Bishop Zavala will succeed both retiring Bishop Walter Sullivan (Richmond, Va.) and Bishop Thomas Gumbleton (Detroit, Mich.) as Bishop President of Pax Christi USA.
