WHAT: Press conference at the Florida State Capitol, Tallahassee, Fla. Pax Christi USA, the national Catholic peace and justice movement, will announce its plan to bring election monitors from the international community to observe and monitor the November elections in Florida. Pax Christi USA will also issue a call inviting other state and national organizations to join them in monitoring the election, especially in Florida, in an attempt to make the democratic process transparent and free of the kind of controversy witnessed in Florida during the 2000 election.
WHO: Pax Christi USA is the national Catholic peace and justice movement, a section of Pax Christi International which has sections in over 30 countries around the world. Pax Christi USA’s membership includes over 130 U.S. Catholic bishops, 600 religious communities and 700 churches in the U.S.
Speaking at the press conference will be Dave Robinson, the national coordinator of Pax Christi USA, who just returned from a Pax Christi International summit in Brussels, Belgium where he shared plans for the election monitoring with representatives from Pax Christi sections in 30 countries. Dave will travel to El Salvador in mid-March as an election monitor for the presidential elections in that country and meet with Salvadoran organizations interested in sending members as part of the international delegation planned for Florida in November.
Also speaking will be Carol Ann Breyer, state coordinator of Pax Christi Florida. Breyer will be joined by citizens from around the state who support efforts to assure that this year’s elections are conducted in such a way as to avoid the scandal of 2000.
