Please find below ideas on how you can promote "The War in Iraq Remains a Defeat for Humanity," a sign-on statement to remember the words of Pope John Paul II when he called the Iraq war a 'defeat for humanity.'

Suggestions for Dioceses and Parishes
  • Leaflet copies of "The War in Iraq Remains a Defeat for Humanity" at your parish after Sunday masses
  • Leaflet at diocesan events
  • Send a copy of the statement to your bishop and pastor asking them to individually endorse the statement
  • Ask your pastor to put statement up on your parish Web site. (They can link to this page, http://www.paxchristiusa.org/news_events_more.asp?id=921)
  • Ask your pastor to sign the statement as a parish community
  • Ask your pastor or parish priest to preach on the Iraq war and to inform parishioners of the opportunity to sign the statement – set up a table with signature forms outside of the church or in your parish hall.
  • Use statement as a reflection piece in bulletin.
  • Publish the statement in your diocesan paper – always be sure to include Pax Christi USA's web address, www.paxchristiusa.org.
  • Hold a debate at your parish using PCUSA’s statement as a catalyst.
  • Put copies of the statement in all of the mailboxes of ministers and ministries at your parish.
  • Use the sign-on ad to initiate an event at your parish or school on Catholic social teaching and war.
  • Reach out to your Directors of Religious Education and ask him/her to use the statement in the parish’s various religious education programs.

    Suggestions for Peace and Justice Groups
  • Organize letter-writing campaigns to your elected representatives based on this statement and the Friends’ Committee on National Legislation’s program, The Next Step for Iraq, found at http://www.fcnl.org/iraq/
  • Plan a protest against the war in Iraq at your elected representatives’ offices and read the statement aloud as part of the witness.
  • Print part of the sign-on statement on a t-shirt with Pax Christi USA’s web address, www.paxchristiusa.org for more info.

  • Organize an educational meeting or teach-in at public library or other public location focused on the war in Iraq and make the statement available to all attending.

  • Organize a public speaking event at your college and ask a professor from the college to address some aspect of the letter from his/her specialty (For instance, ask a theology professor to address the war in Iraq from a Just War perspective; ask a historian to speak to the parallels between this occupation and other famous occupations in history; etc.)

  • Send statement to diocesan and secular newspapers with request that it be published
  • Use statement as a basis for a letter-to-the-editor – be sure to include a link or information on where to find the whole statement and how to add signatures.
