Background: After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, both the U.S. government and al Qaeda sought to rally their supporters by interpreting these attacks through competing narratives. However, the Bush Administration’s “War on Terror” was a fear-based story that unwittingly validated al Qaeda’s story of mythic struggle against the West. Author and activist Tom Cordaro examines the narrative structure and psychology of the “War on Terror” and how it shapes our choices in ways that increase the threat of terrorism. He then answers that there is an alternative—an understanding of both the events of 9-11 and our larger national story which can counter the threat of terrorism and build a more genuine peace rooted in justice. As the new U.S. administration begins to articulate its own response to terrorism—whether in policies toward Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Middle East or elsewhere—we must ask whether we will continue to be a nation motivated primarily by fear, or will we embrace an alternative rooted in freedom and hope?

This event is part of Mr. Cordaro's national speaking tour. For more information on the tour, click here. For information on booking Mr. Cordaro, please contact Patrick Cashio at communications@paxchristiusa.org or 814-460-5512.
