Called to the Common Good

Called to the Common Good

An Initiative of Pax Christi USA and
Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good

Pax Christi USA, in partnership with Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, has launched an initiative aimed at placing “the common good” at the heart of our nation’s policies and political conversation.

In the fall of 2004, Pax Christi USA led the effort to challenge those voices which sought to narrowly define Catholic political identity to a few, narrow issues. Our “Life Does Not End at Birth” Campaign reached hundreds of thousands of Catholics throughout the United States through full-page ads in Catholic publications and metropolitan dailies, radio spots in major cities, and an internet campaign featuring Sr. Joan Chittister, OSB, and actor-activist Martin Sheen.

As the congressional and state-level elections of 2006 heat up, Pax Christi USA and Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good are directing their efforts to make sure candidates at every level address the issues with a focus on “the common good.” The common good is at the heart of Catholic social teaching, Jesus’ proclamation of the reign of God and the messages of the prophets of Scripture. As Catholics, we are called to the common good. This election year, and every election year, we are called to organize and speak out so that those progressive values which are rooted in our faith—compassion, justice, equality, dignity, love of neighbor, mercy—play a central role in deciding the direction of our nation.
