Miscellaneous tips in dealing with
the media
Remember
that, in a very important sense, you are doing
them a favor by alerting them to tell a good,
important story that they otherwise would miss
– you’re just helping them do their
job.
- When you telephone to see if they got the
release, this is an opportunity for you to
give a "pitch" about what you are doing
and why it is important and interesting to both
you AND the readers. Give an example of how the
readers are connected. Are your readers taxpayers?
Voters? Or members of a constituency that have
taken a stand on the topic? Therefore that readership
has a reason to be interested in this topic.
- If the article does not appear at the time expected,
call to find out when it might appear.
- Call and/or write to thank the paper/writer/editor
after the article appears. They get so few
thank-you's!
